Below is a summary of the guidelines for transferring and transporting bariatric patients, based on the “State of Ohio Emergency Medical Services Adult Guidelines and Procedures Manual:
Any patient weighing more than 300 pounds requires two full crews (four personnel) for transport.
PrimeCare Ambulance Services will assign an additional crew member for every 50 to 100 pounds exceeding 350 pounds to ensure safe lifting and handling of the patient.
The patient must be loaded onto a cot in the down position, which should remain lowered throughout the transport.
Two EMS personnel will accompany the patient in the transport vehicle. If more personnel are required, they will travel in a separate vehicle.
Due to the need for extra crews in bariatric transports, additional fees will apply for each leg of the trip and for every extra crew member required. Please contact us for fee details.
